CJUS 560 - Juvenile Justice Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Prerequisite(s): CJUS 500 and CJUS 510 Corequisite(s): None Restriction(s): Students must be enrolled in the Master of Science in Criminal Justice program
This course will explore the development, methods and philosophy of the juvenile justice system. Special attention will be given to the impact of a diverse society on how juveniles are treated in the system, and police, court and community involvement will be discussed. The course will examine controversies and problematic issues with emphasis on the development of new ideas and the improvement of existing programming for juveniles in the justice system.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
- Examine how the juvenile justice system operates in a diverse society.
- Explore the relationship between race, socioeconomic status and the juvenile justice system.
- Analyze research on juvenile justice and delinquency in the Unites States.
- Critically analyze how the criminal justice system, and other outside forces, influence the juvenile justice system.
- Develop potential solutions and improvements for the juvenile justice system in the United States by applying juvenile delinquency and justice theory.
