Program Learning Outcomes


A graduate of the Automotive Technology AAS program should be able to:

  • Demonstrate entry level knowledge and comprehension of the construction and operation of various automotive and light duty truck systems.
  • Maintain, diagnose and repair automotive and light duty truck braking systems.
  • Maintain, diagnose, repair, and adjust automotive and light duty truck steering and suspension systems.
  • Maintain, diagnose and repair automotive and light duty truck electrical and electronic systems
  • Maintain, diagnose and repair all gasoline engine fuel system components, emission control devices, engine performance systems and data networks on various automotive and light duty trucks.
  • Maintain, diagnose and repair automotive and light duty truck gasoline engines.
  • Maintain, diagnose and repair automotive and light duty truck electric and hybrid operating systems.
  • Demonstrate entry level employability and safety skills.

Technical Standards for Automotive Technology Programs


The technical standards listed below are intended to inform students of the skills, abilities, and behavioral expectations required in this program. These technical standards reflect performance abilities and characteristics that are necessary to successfully complete the requirements of this program at SUNY Delhi. These standards are not conditions of admission to the program, but persons interested in applying for admission to the program should review this list to develop a better understanding of the skills, abilities, and behavioral expectations necessary to successfully complete the program. Thinking skills

General: Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and computer-related automotive failures.

Specific:

  • Understand and interpret automotive manuals, diagrams, charts, meters and gauges.
  • Perform searches on computer and in manuals for necessary information.
  • Take measurements and do conversions.
  • Identify automotive components and systems.
  • Recognize indicators of malfunctions.
  • Analyze information and draw conclusions based on a review of findings.
  • Measure and calculate electrical power.

Sensory/Observation Skills

General Requirements: Valid driver’s license

General: Use sensory cues to inspect and test components to determine root causes of failures and respond properly.

Specific:

  • Interpret read-outs on meters, gauges, and computers.
  • Distinguish identifying colors of wires, knobs and other parts.
  • Recognize and interpret colors and textures of residue on parts.
  • Detect and respond to noises, vibrations, temperatures, and smells that indicate problems.
  • Select appropriate materials, tools, and equipment for maintenance and repairs.
  • Judge distances and space relationships of objects.
  • Manipulate certain parts and tools by feel only.

Motor skills

General: Possess sufficient physical strength, flexibility, and dexterity.

Specific:

  • Operate necessary tools and equipment.
  • Remove and replace failed components and small parts.
  • Position and maneuver in confined spaces.
  • Work at varying heights.
  • Lift and transport equipment and materials as necessary.

Communication skills

General: Communicate to gather and convey information.

Specific:

  • Speak, write, and understand English.
  • Obtain necessary information from oral and written sources.

  • Utilize automotive technical terms and expressions.
  • Document work accurately.
