VETS 243 - Fundamentals of Animal Dentistry (PILOT COURSE)

This online asynchronous course is designed to develop veterinary technology students’ fundamental knowledge in dentistry. Students will recognize a patient’s dental health status and learn appropriate techniques in order to promote and maintain dental health in companion animals at an entry level. Students will learn the components to complete a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) including diagnostic radiography. Students will communicate medical and financial information to clients through effective verbal and written means to promote preventative oral health. The course will focus on canine and feline species and will address equid and commonly-owned exotic species.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: Upon successful completion of the course, each student will be able to do the following:

  1. Utilize their knowledge of dental anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to describe the steps to perform a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) using both manual and machine methodologies
  2. Describe techniques and steps required to produce diagnostic intra-oral full mouth dental radiographic images of canine and feline species
  3. Identify and explain how to prepare and maintain equipment, instruments, and supplies commonly used in veterinary dental procedures prioritizing safety of the patient and technician
  4. Develop and deliver client education regarding dental health (prevention, patient discharge, homecare, and justification of cost) in a clear and accurate written and oral format
