CJUS 378 - Trauma and Crisis Response

Prerequisite(s): PSYC 100  (or higher)
This course examines trauma as created by several human experiences, such as sexual assault, child abuse, natural disasters, generational trauma, etc. Students will learn about the etiology of trauma, which underscores the impact of trauma on brain development, on the human body, on a person’s ability to learn, and on human relationships. Racial, gender and class based trauma will be explored. Students will critically examine approaches, such as treatment options and coping skills, to addressing trauma in various settings. Finally, students will explore various models of trauma informed responses in the criminal justice field, including mental health, medical and criminal calls.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
  1. Differentiate between the various causes of trauma
  2. Explain the brain response to trauma and developmental concepts related to trauma effects across the lifespan.
  3. Evaluate crisis intervention models through an evidence-based trauma informed lens, including contributions from multiple discplines
  4. Demonstrate the written and oral communication skills necessary to articulate the unique needs of trauma survivors across social context in order to effectively advocate on their behalf.
