CJUS 385 - Interpersonal Violence

This cours provides students with an overview of the nature, extent, and causes of interpersonal violence. The course will examine the history of and theories regarding family violence, especially the prevalent forms of family violence including: child abuse, intimate partner violence, and elder abuse. The legal, medical, and social service response to the phenomenon of family violence will also be discussed. 

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 

  1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the nature and extent of interpersonal violence;
  2. Distinguish and critique the various theoretical perspectives used to explain interpersonal violence; 
  3. Identify the risk factors and dynamics of interpersonal violence;
  4. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the legal response to interpersonal violence, the medical role in interpersonal violence, and the programs and services available to both victims and offenders of interpersonal violence through the analysis of literature and articles; 
  5. Evaluate preventative measures taken to reduce interpersonal violence.
