An introductory course in Air Conditioning Systems with an emphasis on functions and equipment related to standard heat pumps and geothermal heat pumps. Specific topics will include Heat Pump Fundamentals, Heat Pump Systems, Heat Pump Principles, Flow Controls and Accessories, Heat Pump Electrical Systems, Heat Pump Electrical Components, Heat Pump Thermostats, Electrical Troubleshooting, and Refrigerant-Side Troubleshooting.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
1. Explain the relationship between pressure and temperature as it applies to a heat pump system.
2. Exhibit an understanding of the refrigerant flow through a heat pump system in each operating mode.
3. Describe functions of the key electrical components used in modern heat pumps.
4. Discuss the differences between control strategies used for heat pumps and those used for other air conditioning systems.
