This course provides an in-depth development of rhetorical strategies in persuasive and expository prose as introduced in ENGL 100 . Emphasis is on the incorporation of critical thinking within the composition of analytical and researched essays which integrate primary and secondary sources, scholarly and otherwise. Students will refine their prose through an awareness of grammatical and rhetorical conventions. They will write at least 6000 words in original and revised drafts.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for Written Communication is satisfied by ENGL 200. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:
- research a topic, develop an argument, and organize supporting details;
- demonstrate coherent college-level written communication that informs, persuades, or otherwise engages with an audience;
- evaluate communication for substance, bias, and intended effect;
- demonstrate the ability to revise and improve written communication.
The General Education requirement for Information Literacy is satisfied by ENGL 200. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:
- locate information effectively using tools appropriate to their need and discipline;
- evaluate information with an awareness of authority, validity, and bias;
- demonstrate an understanding of the ethical dimensions of information use, creation, and dissemination.
