VETS 251 - Veterinary Business Practices [PILOT COURSE]

Prerequisite(s): VETS 183  and BIOL 230  and [CHEM 120  or CHEM 180 ]
Restriction(s): Veterinary Science Technology - AAS  

This course will introduce students to the principles and procedures involved in the daily operations of a veterinary practice. Topics include but are not limited to the veterinary team dynamic, laws and ethics, keeping inventory business marketing, safety and regulatory matters, and medical documentation. Students will also become familiar with client relations, team communication, and leadership techniques.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:

  1. Discuss the legal and professional responsibilies of each veterinary team members (veterinarian, licensed veterinary technician, veterinary assistant, etc.) and how they contribute to the workplace. Measurement: Virtual Practice activity.
  2. ldentify the roles of regulatory agencies, occupational safety, and controlled substance regulations in veterinary medicine. Measurement: OSHA and Controlled Substance workheet and/or class discussion.
  3. Demonstrate professional verbal and written communication skills with both colleagues and clients. Measurement: Role-playing demonstrations and/or client education activity.
  4. Practice basic business functions such as inventory maintenance, medical documents, scheduling, and fi nancial transactions. Measurement: Practice manager assignment or quiz.
  5. Discuss the legal issues surrounding the veterinary-client-patient relationship. Measurement: Quiz and/or class discussion.
