This course provides an overview of human development from conception to late childhood in the areas of physical, perceptual, cognitive, linguistic, and social development, as well as the development of identity and peer and family relationships. Historic (e.g., nature verses nurture) and current (e.g., developmental systems) perspectives on human development will be explored. Developmental research methods and experimental design will also be reviewed.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
- Students will demonstrate understanding of the methods social scientists use to explore social phenomena, including observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, experimentation, evaluation of evidence, and employment of mathematical and interpretive analysis.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of major concepts, models and issues of at least one discipline in the social sciences.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of the experimental designs used in child development research, and the current and historic approaches to the discipline. Students will also learn to read and analyze research articles, and demonstrate the ability to write a research paper.
