This course will provide students with a hands-on introduction to the biology, taxonomy, enrichment, behavior, husbandry, regulatory oversight and healthcare of non-human primates used in biomedical research. Students will gain a unique experience working with non-human primates to learn various techniques/procedures as they relate to the care and upkeep of a primate colony.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
- Will be aware of the major taxonomic divisions of primates
- Demonstrate proficiency with the husbandry requirements of caged monkeys
- Show comfort with methods of restraint and transfer
- Will know the proper safety protocols and public health implications of working with non- human primates
- Will be familiar with the biology and importance of primates in biomedical research
- Will know the laws and regulations governing the use and healthcare requirements of primates
- Will be able to obtain and analyze samples of blood, urine, and feces
- Will be able to properly calculate and administer drugs and compounds by accepted the routes of administration
- Will be able to monitor the reproductive cycle of monkeys
- Show working knowledge of the behavior of primates and develop some skill in behavior modification techniques
- Understand the importance of the psychological well-being of captive primates
- Develop creative ideas and be an active participant in enriching the lives of our primates
- Understand the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) used in the Farnworth Hall Primate Colony
- Be certified to use the Class4 Therapeutic K-Laser and carry out prescribed laser therapy
