LITR 105 - Diversity through Literature: Special Topics

This course introduces students to the principles of literary interpretation and analysis. The class will focus on a guiding theme, chosen by instructor, that highlights a diverse range of authors and identities while examining social structures that enable privilege and oppression. Students will examine how literature is used to promote and enact social justice. 

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for Diversity: Equity, Inclusion, & Social Justice is satisfied by LITR 105. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:

  1. describe the historical and contemporary societal factors that shape the development of individual and group identity involving race, class, and gender;
  2. analyze the role that complex networks of social structures and systems play in the creation and perpetuation of the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity; and
  3. apply the principles of rights, access, equity, and autonomous participation to past, current, or future social justice action.

The General Education requirement for Humanities is satisfied by LITR 105. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of the conventions and methods of at leasst one of the humanities; and
  2. recognize and analyze nuance and complexity of meaning through critical reflections on text, visual images, or artifacts.
