MATH 225 - Differential Equations Credit Hours: 4 Lecture Hours: 4 Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 0
General Education Code(s): 23MA Prerequisite(s): MATH 220 or equivalent or MATH 215 and permission of the instructor Corequisite(s): None Restriction(s): None
Technology is used extensively throughout the course (graphing calculators and a Computer Algebra System). Topics studied are first-order differential equations with applications, differential equations of higher order with applications of second-order differential equations, differential equations with variable coefficients, the LaPlace transform, system of linear differential equations, and numerical methods.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning is satisfied by MATH 225. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to demonstrate mathematical skills and quantitative reasoning, including the ability to:
- interpret and draw inferences from appropriate mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, tables, or schematics;
- represent mathematical information symbolically, visually, numerically, or verbally as appropriate; and
- employ quantitative methods such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, or statistics to solve problems.
Course-specific SLOs for MATH 225:
- Solve first order differential equations using separation of variables and substitution
- Solve second order differential equations using reduction of order, superposition, and variation of parameters
- Find an approximate solution to first and second-order differential equations using the Euler and Runge-Kutta methods.
- Perform operations on LaPlace transforms
- Use differential equations to solve application problems involving simple harmonic motion, damped motion, and forced motion
- Solve problems involving systems of linear differential equations
- Use a computer algebra system to solve a variety of differential equations
