MATH 102 - Math for Applied Technology

Credit Hours: 3
Lecture Hours: 3 or 4
Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 0

General Education Code(s): AOMA
Prerequisite(s): MATH 90  or equivalent
This is an introductory course in technical mathematics. It is intended for students with minimal mathematics backgrounds who wish to prepare for further study in technical areas. Topics include geometry, measurement, equations and formulas, proportions, trigonometry, and linear equations. Enrollment is restricted to students in certificate programs in building technologies, electrical and mechanical technologies, and CADD. Students cannot receive credit for both MATH 095  and MATH 102.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning for AOS degrees (AOMA) is satisfied by MATH 102. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to demonstrate mathematical skills and quantitative reasoning, including the ability to:

  1. interpret and draw inferences from appropriate mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, tables, or schematics;
  2. represent mathematical information symbolically, visually, numerically, or verbally as appropriate;
  3. employ quantitative methods such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, or statistics to solve problems;

Course-specific SLOs include:

  1. interpret and draw inferences from geometric formulas, visual drawings, or applied problem situations;
  2. represent rational numbers in various forms (fraction, decimal, percent);
  3. perform arithmetic operations involving whhole and rational numbers with and without the use of a calculator;
  4. calculate volume and surface area of three-dimensional shapes using appropriate formulas and gemetrical concepts;
  5. use algebraic equations and formulas to determine solutions to problems that are relevant to applied technologies.
