CHEM 230 - Organic Chemistry I Credit Hours: 4 Lecture Hours: 3 Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 3
Prerequisite(s): CHEM 185 or equivalent Corequisite(s): None Restriction(s): None
This is the first course in a year-long, in-depth study of organic chemistry. Integration of fact and theory emphasizing relationships among structure, properties, reaction mechanisms, and spectroscopy of organic compounds is studied. Laboratory work illustrates principles and techniques of synthesis and characterization of organic compounds.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
- Assign and/or interpret fundamental nomenclature with respect to organic structures;
- Identify properties associated with organic molecules and associated functional groups;
- Assign correct stereochemistry to chiral compounds;
- Employ basic organic mechanisms/reactions for the synthesis of organic molecules;
- Demonstrate techniques and procedures commonly used in a synthetic organic chemistry laboratory for the isolation, purification, and characterization of organic compounds.
