In this course the plastic characteristics of clay are explored through experiments in construction, throwing on the wheel, hand building, and other means of fabrication. Students experiment with mass and texture, form and context in functional and non-functional objects.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for The Arts is satisfied by ARTS 104. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of at least one principal form of artistic expression and the creative process inherent therein.
Students who successfully complete ARTS 104 (course-specific SLOs) will be able to:
- Identify the elements of art, and principles of design using descriptive language; and articulate supported interpretations of select works.
- Create original artwork in which students effectively utilize the elements of art and principles of design.
- Demonstrate technical proficiency in the creation of functional ceramic constructions. Describe the properties and limitations of clay and glazes.
- Practice good studio management skills in the maintenance of a healthy studio environment.
