VETS 396 - Advanced Equine Techniques Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 3
Prerequisite(s): VETS 183 and BIOL 230 and [CHEM 120 or CHEM 180 ], all with a grade of C or better Restriction(s): Veterinary Science Technology - AAS or Veterinary Technology - BS
Advanced Equine Techniques is designed to give veterinary technology students an opportunity to further their equine knowledge and nursing skills through an intensive, hands-on and lecture based course. They will become more proficient in their physical, lameness, neurological, and colic exam skills, practice equine dentistry under veterinary supervision, and practice skills such as IV catheter placement, NG tube placement, ultrasound, and radiographic techniques. They will have the opportunity to assist in a routine equine surgical castration as well as work up other cases that present during the course. Equine diseases, advanced medical techniques and other topics will be explored through class discussions and case studies.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
- Assess a horse’s health using the physical, neurological, colic, and lameness exams and describe what are normal and abnormal findings;
- Create a list of differential diagnosis based on exam and diagnostic findings and recommend possible further diagnostics;
- Demonstrate common skills in equine medicine including IV catheter placement, nasogastric tube placement, basic limb and abdominal ultrasound, limb radiographs, nerve blocks, and surgery prep and assistance;
- Analyze case studies on different topics in equine medicine and communicate their findings through a written synopsis; and
- Develop and execute health care plans for horses in the teaching herd.
