CJUS 610 - Effective Policing Methods

Restriction(s): Students must be enrolled in the Master of Science in Criminal Justice program

This course will examine the methods and/or styles of policing in America today. A historical view of methods of policing will be explored including the origins of CompStat and implications on policing throughout the United States. This course will also examine the process of measuring effectiveness and success in policing by examining some of the famous policing “experiments” and studies to examine what questions were asked, what answers were derived and if the methodology was valid. 

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
  1. Analyze how the history of law enforcement has influenced the development of modern professional policing.
  2. Compare and contrast the issues related to the main approaches to modern policing.
  3. Critically evaluate research on policing.
  4. Analyze how research on policing has influenced the development of modern professional policing.
  5. Evaluate the concept of predictive policing and its future applications.
