CITA 115 - Network Basics

This course introduces basic networking concepts and terminology to help students who do not take CITA 120 - Computing Technologies I  prior to CITA 200 - Data Communications and Networking I . This is mainly students in the Accounting - BBA , and Business and Technology Management - BBA  who are not required to take CITA 120 . Topics include defining computer networks and describing their purpose and various network topologies. The course will also discuss the definition and purpose of switches, hubs, routers, repeaters and bridges.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
  1. Define a computer network.
  2. List the four purposes of a network.
  3. Identify and explain the elements of communication. 
  4. Describe the two types of networks.
  5. Describe the characteristics of the mesh, bus, ring, star, and hybrid topologies.
  6. List the items that need to be considered when selecting a network topology.
  7. Define physical and logical topologies.
  8. Define and explain the purpose of switches, hubs, routers, repeaters and bridges.
