This course deals with the examination of blood, urine, feces, exudates, and cells for diagnostic and prognostic purposes in veterinary practice. Lectures cover the theories on which the tests are based and the relevance of laboratory results to the evaluation of animal health.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Demonstrate the understanding of basic principles of hematology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, cytology and serology.
Discuss the variety of pieces of laboratory equipment used and understand the routine maintenance.
Demonstrate the understanding of how to prepare, handle and submit appropriate samples for diagnostic analysis in order to ensure accuracy of results.
Discuss proper maintenance and quality control procedures necessary to ensure accurate results.
Discuss the gross, chemical and microscopic evaluation of a urine sample.
Discuss the necessary analysis that is necessary to complete a CBC.
Discuss the variety of coagulation tests and the principles behind them.
Discuss the principles of blood chemistries.
Discuss and describe blood parasites.
Discuss the principles of ELISA and other in-house test kits. See attached
