This course examines the role of the judiciary in the American system of government as it relates to such issues as race, poverty, privacy, sex, religion, speech, press, assembly, and the rights of the accused under the Bill of Rights and the 14th and 15th Amendments.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: Students will be able to:

Understand and evaluate the civil rights and liberties provided by the U.S. Constitution and the Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
Understand and evaluate legislation, and the judicial review of legislation, on the State and Federal levels with respect to civil rights and liberties from the late 1700s through modern times.
Evaluate and analyze numerous examples of people being denied constitutionally protected civil rights and liberties in the United States.
Critically analyze key U.S. Supreme Court decisions regarding civil rights and liberties.
