VETS 211 - Preventative and Shelter Medicine Credit Hours: 1 Lecture Hours: 0 Laboratory Hours: 3
Prerequisite(s): VETS 210 with a grade of C+ or higher (VETS 210 may also be taken concurrently with VETS 211)

This is a practical experience course providing an additional opportunity to develop skills in the areas of preventative medicine and nursing, including safety, restraint, specimen collection, and laboratory and nursing procedures. Information on shelter medicine includes disease control, vaccination and wellness protocols, behavioral health, zoonosis, and feral cat control.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
- Improved confidence and proficiency in physical exam, venipuncture, injection, and other oral and topical medication techniques.
- Improved knowledge of common small animal medical conditions and preventative medicine protocols.
- Improved knowledge and proficiency in performing common diagnostic tests serology, complete blood counts, serum chemistry, urinalysis, and fecal analysis.
SERVICE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Engage in a Service Learning activity that links real real-world social issues with real-world writing contexts.
- Develop, through Service-Learning and other course activities, an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.
- Produce and/or edit reflection pieces that enhance community understanding and appreciation of service.
