VETS 216 - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine Credit Hours: 1 Lecture Hours: 1 Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 0
General Education Code(s): 23DV, 23CD Prerequisite(s): VETS 120 or VETS 121 This course is designed to enhance awareness and understanding of the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion within our community and veterinary medicine. Topics include the historical and social context of group identities, power dynamics, privilege, current events, and social justice. Students will be asked to self-reflect on their roles as individuals and group members and examine concepts and perceptions that have influenced them, as well as society, in terms of both the personal and professional.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for Diversity: Equity, Inclusion, & Social Justice is satisfied by VETS 216. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:
- describe the historical and contemporary societal factors that shape the development of individual and group identity involving race, class, and gender;
- analyze the role that complex networks of social structures and systems play in the creation and perpetuation of the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity; and
- apply the principles of rights, access, equity, and autonomous participation to past, current, or future social justice action.
The General Education requirement for Civic Discourse will be satisfied by VETS 216. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to demonstrate the discourse skills necessary to participate in civic life, including:
- the deliberation of ideas through reasoned inquiry that seeks new information and considers multiple viewpoints; and
- the ethical practice of advocacy, dissent, and dialogue that constructively attends to points of conflict.
