Topics covered include: a discussion of the nature of science; a detailed analysis of the scientific method to help students understand how and why people study science; a study of some major scientific experiments and discoveries including the work of recent Nobel Prize winners; a look at the applications and implications of science and technology; ethical considerations in the role and responsibility of the scientist; and the analysis of current issues in science.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The general education requirement for critical thinking is satisfied by SCIE 110. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:

  1. clearly articulate an issue or problem;
  2. identify, analyze, and evaluate ideas, data, and arguments as they occur in their own or others’ work;
  3. acknowledge limitations such as perspective and bias; and
  4. develop well-reasoned (logical) arguments to form judgments and/or draw conclusions.
