NURS 101 - Introduction to Nursing

Prerequisite(s): BIOL 220 with C or better (may be taken concurrently)
Restriction(s): Nursing - AAS (prelicensure program)  or Nursing: Dual Degree - AAS/BSN  

This course introduces healthcare concepts; the client, environment, health, and nursing, using evidence based practice. Nursing and developmental theories are explored. Therapeutic communication principles are integral and emphasized. The basic role of the professional nurse, collaboration, and safety, will be presented. The nursing process will be introduced incorporating Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Current trends are explored including ethical and legal issues, as well as the impact of culture, spiritual, ethnic and social diversity in healthcare.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
  1. Demonstrate the ability to apply principles of therapeutic communication when interacting with diverse client populations, fostering trust and understanding while assessing and integrating cultural considerations into patient care.
  2. Analyze the various roles and responsibilities of nursing professionals and demonstrate effective interprofessional collaboration to enhance patient care, recognizing the contributions of various healthcare team members.
  3. Describe current trends and ethical/legal concepts in healthcare, applying this knowledge to make informed decisions in nursing practice.
  4. Identify and apply the principles of the nursing process, incorporating the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs to address the health needs of individuals across the lifespan.
  5. Recognize and utilize basic principles of health informatics to enhance team communication and improve patient care outcomes, supporting quality and safety in nursing practice.
  6. Employ critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to analyze complex patient scenarios and make evidence-based nursing decisions, implementing strategies that ensure patient safety and quality of care.
  7. Provide compassionate and holistic care to patients and families during end-of-life situations, addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs while effectively supporting individuals experiencing grief and loss.
