ENGL 100 - Composition I

This is the core writing course taken by students at the College. Students will be instructed on how to write for a variety of contexts and audiences and in a variety of genres that may include explanatory, analytical, and persuasive essays.  Students are required to practice information literacy in academic research with primary and secondary sources and to develop a thesis-driven argument. Emphasis is placed on the process of drafting and revising.  

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for Written Communication is satisfied by ENGL 100. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:

  1. research a topic, develop an argument, and organize supporting details;
  2. demonstrate coherent college-level written communication that informs, persuades, or otherwise engages with an audience;
  3. evaluate communication for substance, bias, and intended effect;
  4. demonstrate the ability to revise and improve written communication.

The General Education requirement for Information Literacy is satisfied by ENGL 100. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:

  1. locate information effectively using tools appropriate to their need and discipline;
  2. evaluate information from a variety of sources with an awareness of authority, validity, bias, and origin; and
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the ethical dimensions of information use, creation, and dissemination, whether from traditional sources or emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence.
