CHEM 180 - General Chemistry I Credit Hours: 4 Lecture Hours: 3 Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 3
General Education Code(s): 23NS, 23RE Other Course Attribute(s): LASC, LSCI
Prerequisite(s): CHEM 120 with a grade of C or better (or high-school chemistry with laboratory); MATH 128 (or higher) with a grade of C or better, or math placement of 0M2, 0M3, or 0M4; or instructor permission. Restriction(s): None
Corequisite(s): None
Topics covered in this course include: atomic structure and periodicity of elements, molecular structure and bonding, stoichiometry, solutions, states of matter, and introductory thermodynamics.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The general education requirement for critical thinking is satisfied by CHEM 180. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:
- clearly articulate an issue or problem;
- identify, analyze, and evaluate ideas, data, and arguments as they occur in their own or others’ work;
- acknowledge limitations such as perspective and bias; and
- develop well-reasoned (logical) arguments to form judgments and/or draw conclusions.
Course-specific SLOs for CHEM 180:
- Understanding of the methods scientists use to explore natural phenomena, including observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, experimentation, evaluation of evidence, and employment of mathematical analysis; and
- Application of scientific data, concepts, and models in one of the natural (or physical) sciences.
- Student will demonstrate a basic knowledge of chemistry, including but not limited to, atomic structure, elements, bonding, chemical reactions, and stoichiometry.
