MATH 111 - Math for Veterinary Professionals

Credit Hours: 3
Lecture Hours: 3
Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 0

General Education Code(s): 23MA
Other Course Attribute(s): LASC, MATH

Restriction(s): Veterinary Science Technology - AAS  (Online program only)

Students will practice principles and techniques of mathematics and statistics that they will encounter in a veterinary field. Students will learn to become competent in calculations and use of oral, parenteral, and intravenous medications.  This course covers basic mathematics, elementary algebra, measurements, drug orders, dose calculations, calculations for creating solutions such as intravenous fluids and constant rate infusions, as well as mathematical applications in anesthesia, radiology, and nutrition. This course includes the application of mathematical modeling techniques to analyze, interpret, and solve real-world problems in veterinary medicine.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning is satisfied by MATH 111. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to demonstrate mathematical skills and quantitative reasoning, including the ability to:

  1. interpret and draw inferences from appropriate mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, tables, or schematics;
  2. represent mathematical information symbolically, visually, numerically, or verbally as appropriate; and
  3. employ quantitative methods such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, or statistics to solve problems.

Course-specific Student Learning Outcomes for MATH 111:

  1. Solve simple arithmetic problems, including fractions, decimals and percent.
  2. Perform calculations involving the use of scientific notation.
  3. Use ratios, proportions and dimensional analysis to convert measurements between American Standard, household, apothecary, and metric measurement systems.
  4. Perform dosage calculations for oral and parenteral medications.
  5. Calculate rates of fluid administration for intravenous administration including constant rate infusion.
  6. Calculate anesthesia gas flow rates.
  7. Calculate nutritional requirements.
  8. Perform calculations required for radiology.
  9. Recognize statistical measures such central tendency, distribution, ranges and variance, standard deviation and apply them to quality control.
