VETS 175 - Preparation for Veterinary Technology Preceptorship Online Credit Hours: 1 Lecture Hours: 1 Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 0
This preparatory course will assist students in developing job seeking skills while pursuing and securing a preceptorship site. The course covers topics including, how to find a preceptorship, types of facilities, writing a resume, interviewing for a preceptorship/basic interpersonal communication, legal issues while on a preceptorship, what is expected of students while on their preceptorship, paperwork submission and deadlines, etc. During this time, the student will be required to investigate potential preceptorship opportunities, secure a preceptorship as well as submit appropriate paper work by the due date prescribed by the course instructor. Other topics will include but not be limited to communication, compassion fatigue, euthanasia, self-care, and stress management.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
- Each student will produce a resume and cover letter that they can use to secure a preceptorship site or employment.
- Student will identify personal traits and veterinary technician skills required to complete a successful preceptorship and work experience.
- Students will complete and submit all required documentation from their preceptorship site by the assigned due date in order to participate in the preceptorship.
- Students will engage in online search tools to find a preceptorship site by the due date.
- Students will develop professional job interview skills.
- Students will develop soft skills necessary for professional communication.
