VETS 121 - Introduction to Veterinary Science and Animal Care

This course will introduce students to medical terminology and domestic, farm, exotic, and lab animal species. The course will also focus on the role of the veterinary technician in the veterinary field, career opportunities, licensing requirements, ethics, laws, facilities maintenance, safety, and public health issues as they relate to veterinary medicine. An introduction to the veterinary technology program, basic animal husbandry, issues of self-care, application of critical thinking and intra/interpersonal skills will also be introduced.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The student will be able to:

  1. ldentify and differentiate animal species by sex, groups, and stages of life.
  2. Define medical terminology and abbreviations associated with veterinary medicine.
  3. Recognize professional associations and organizations, educational requirements, and career opportunities as well as the role and scope of practice of a licensed veterinary technician.
  4. Recognize ethical, legal, and safety issues in veterinary medicine.
  5. ldentify signs of stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout associated within veterinary medicine as well as self-care.
  6. Describe basic animal husbandry and care in a clinic/hospital setting
