CJUS 396 - Elder Abuse and Neglect

With people living longer lives, the number of elderly individuals is increasing every year. Many factors impact the way people treat elderly individuals, and unfortunately, with the rising number of elderly people in the world, the incidents of elder abuse have increased, as well. This course will address the aging process, review different types of elder abuse and theories regarding why elder abuse occurs, and identify best practices to help recognize, address and prevent elder abuse in the health care, criminal justice and social services fields.

Equivalent to HONR 396  and SOCI 396  

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:

  1. Understand the methods social scientists use to explore social phenomena, including observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, experimentation, evaluation of evidence, and employment of mathematical and interpretive analysis.
  2. Knowledge of major concepts, models and issues of at least one discipline in the social sciences.
  3. Investigate case studies of elder abuse to determine best practices for professionals working in the justice, health care, and social services systems.
  4. Research and analyze criminal justice and social science data to incorporate it into a substative research project demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter.
