Prerequisite(s): GOVT 110 (or higher GOVT course) or HIST 100 (or higher HIST course) or instructor permission This course uses different policy areas to examine the institutional structures, key non-state actors, and domestic and international context of American government. Course faculty will take advantage of the stie visit to the US Capitol and the District of Columbia to meet practitioners, leaders, and others involved in the governing of the United States as well as representing New York State.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: At the end of this course, the student will be able to, via writing assignments, in-class exercises, and reflection papers, be able to:
- Evaluate how formal and informal powers within Washington shape and change the political experience.
- Describe how the legislative process works.
- Analyze how the fundamental principles of the Constitution manifest in the current political environment.
- Apply Federalist #10 impacts legislative goals of a particular industry.
- Analyze how representational styles differ between the House and Senate.
