HORT 205 - Horticultural Entomology

Prerequisite(s): HORT 120 and HORT 130 or permission of instructor.
Horticultural Entomology considers pests, primarily insects, of ornamental and native woody and herbaceous plants, turf, and greenhouse/indoor plants. Among the topics emphasized are identification, life cycle, history, significance, anatomy as it relates to identification and control, and appropriate control methods of the pest. The principles of Integrated Pest Management will be used when determining pest control methods.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:

Identify the characteristics of Arthropods
Identify the characteristics unique to insects
Identify insect anatomy and how to use that for correct insect identification.
Identify common insect pests of trees, shrubs, herbaceous, turf, indoor and greenhouse plants.
Understand the life cycle of insects and the horticultural significance of each stage of the life cycle.
Recognize symptoms and signs of insect damage and be able to separate those from caused by diseases, mites or physiologic problems.
Identify and evaluate appropriate actions, if any, to take against insect.
Explain the differences among the various insects examined and be able to identify an unknown insect.
Demonstrate proficiency at using references to identify insects.
