VETS 460 - Advanced Research Animal Techniques

Restriction(s): Restricted to students enrolled in the Veterinary Technology - BS  or by permission of instructor.

This course will build on the skills and knowledge introduced in pre-requisite courses with a special focus on advanced dosing and blood collection techniques, identification methods, anesthesia, genetics, breeding colony management, protocol interpretation and implementation, colony health surveillance, and enrichment strategies in mice and rats. Students successfully completing this course will be given advanced rodent technical experience in many important areas of laboratory animal science, further preparing them for a career in this specialized field.

 

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in advanced dosing, identification, and blood collection techniques in mice and rats.
  2. Understand and implement colony health surveillance strategies.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of species-specific behaviors and the effects of environmental enrichment on animal physiological and physchological welfare.
  4. Interpret all aspects of animal use protocols.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique and anesthetic monitoring in mice and rats.
