MECH 153 - Introduction to Industrial Automation Credit Hours: 3 Lecture Hours: 1 Laboratory (or Other) Hours: 6

Prerequisite(s): MECH 112 (minimum grade of C) AND MECH 130 (minimum grade of C) AND MECH 140 (minimum grade of C) This lecture-lab course develops students’ skills in CAD, emphasizing the conventions and techniques of industrial automation drawings as required by ANSI, ASME, ISO, NEMA, and IEC. Students will also be introducted to the fundamentals of AC & DC electricity, electronic and electromechanical components and control, microcontrollers, and their programming.
Student Learning Outcomes of the Course:
- Using relevant drafting standards, complete project assignments relating to the following topics: Electronic components, electromechanical control circuits, and microcontroller-based control circuits.
- Understand fundamentals of electrical circuit theory
- Understand fundamental behavior and usage of basic electrical components (resistors, inductors, capacitors, diodes, etc.)
- Understand fundamentals of controller programming (memory, addressing, number base systems, low vs high level languages, communication types).
- Understand the difference between digital and analog signal types and their applications.
- Populate electrical component prototype boards with relevant devices and controllers as required for assignments.
- Write simple programs for assignments and download into controllers for testing.
- Complete assignments in a timely fashion.
