The diverse factors that have shaped architecture from the Renaissance to the present are explored through reading, writing, discussion, and special projects. The course begins with an abbreviated presentation of major developments in architecture prior to the Renaissance.

Student Learning Outcomes of the Course: The General Education requirement for Humanities is satisfied by HUMN 242. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:

demonstrate knowledge of the conventions and methods of at least one of the humanities; and
recognize and analyze nuance and complexity of meaning through critical reflections on text, visual images, or artifacts.

The General Education requirement for The Arts is satisfied by HUMN 242. To meet this General Education requirement, students will be able to:

demonstrate an understanding of at least one principal form of artistic expression and the creative process inherent therein.

Course-specific SLOs of HUMN 242 include that students will be able to:

Analyze the elements of art, and principles of design using descriptive writing; and articulate supported interpretations of select works.
Create illustrative graphics in which students effectively utilize the elements of art and principles of design.
Identify select works, architects, and styles/periods in the history of architecture.
Explain major developments in the history of architecture, and how socio-cultural change has affected architects/builders.
